Why the ruched 5 cm band
This is the full-width scrunchie with more gathers than our standard 5 cm band. The extra ruching is cut from 22 momme mulberry silk, so the band holds volume instead of collapsing into a flat ring. It is the scrunchie for buns, thick or curly hair, and any time you want the tie itself to be part of the outfit.
A 5 cm band spreads the tension of the elastic across a wider strip of hair, so the tie grips without concentrating pressure in one narrow line. If a slim band gives you a headache by mid-afternoon, this is usually the fix.
What 22 momme feels like
22 momme is heavier than the 19 momme we use on the standard full band. At this width the extra weight is what keeps the gathers standing. Lighter silk at 5 cm tends to collapse and look flat; the denser weave recovers after stretching and keeps colour depth in peacock, ivory or black.

Sizes and hair types
5 cm ruched suits thick, curly, coiling and long hair, and anyone who wears buns or wraps. For a full band with a quieter gather, see the 19 momme 5 cm scrunchie. Care, shipping and returns
