Why the slim band

A 2 cm band is the everyday scrunchie. It gathers a ponytail without adding a visible ring, sits flat under a cap or helmet, and disappears into a braid. If you only own one, this is the shape that gets used most often - and the one that shows wear first, because it is wrapped and unwrapped daily.

What 22 momme feels like

22 momme is heavy silk, and in a hair accessory that weight is the point. It means a denser woven band with more body, so it holds a ponytail on its own and recovers its shape after stretching, rather than going slack the way thin elastic wrapped in light fabric does.

It is also why a real silk scrunchie is a different object from the satin ones sold in a five-pack. Polyester satin can look close in a photograph. Sizes and hair types

2 cm is the slim band, suited to fine to medium hair, half-up styles, and any time you want the tie to stay hidden. If you have thick, curly or long hair, or you wear buns, the 5 cm full band spreads tension over a wider area and holds more hair: the full 5 cm scrunchie. Hangzhou has been a silk city for well over a thousand years, and the finishing work here - cutting, sewing, threading the elastic - is still done by hand in small workshops. Care

Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, or use a mesh bag on a delicate cold cycle. Squeeze gently - do not wring - and air dry away from direct sun. Do not bleach or use fabric softener. Iron on the reverse on the lowest setting. Details: silk care guide.
